I joined Scouts as a leader because I wanted to give my own kids a head start in outdoors skills and teaching little ones that nature needs to be experienced and taken care of. While Beavers don’t necessarily remember everything we teach them at this age, I hope we can add some core memories to their lives that sets a foundation for their future.
When I think about why I joined Scouts, I think about how my life was shaped by my personal experience in scouts at a young age. I was able to learn to connect and find the value of teamwork, while learning skills that have been applied to so many aspects of life at an older age. A few things I learnt to do at a young age such as learning to sew, having the ability to tie numerous knots and what application to apply them, and map reading. I greatly enjoyed spending time outdoors and scouts was the perfect outlet to engage with nature. My father was a scout leader and I admired him for doing so and as such I want to help inspire other youth to find and embrace their own passions ambitions.
As I work in the construction industry as a Mason, I am able to provide a level of improvisation to help youth learn to use the tools they have available to accomplish whatever task they are tasked with. All while maintaining the importance of safety while having fun as a group.
